How Long Does it Take to Get Dental Implants?
Dental implants are widely regarded as the next best thing to having your own natural teeth. Built to last upwards of 15-20 years, dental implants offer numerous aesthetic and functional benefits, and even help prevent future loss of heathy jaw bone. Given the incredible advances in implant technology and computer 3D imaging, increasing numbers of Americans suffering from tooth loss can get the beautiful smile they’ve always wanted.
Here at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, where we offer single implants, multiple teeth implants and same day dental implants, one of the most commonly asked questions by our patients is “how long do dental implants take?” The answer to this question will hinge upon the type of implants placed. Patients who require tooth extraction and bone grafting procedures may need longer treatment times, ranging from 6 to 9 months in total.
Those who are good candidates for same day implants, also known as “All on 4,” or “teeth in a day” can walk out of our Suffolk County dental office with temporary (but non-removable) restorations on the very same day! Three to six months later, once osseointegration is finished, the final custom-made dental implants will be permanently affixed, giving patients permanent replacement teeth that look and function just like their own natural teeth.
Before recommending the best treatment protocol, Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot look a number of factors, including the patient’s oral health, whether the patient has sufficient bone structure to support implants, or if they require a bone graft/sinus lift, as well as the location and number of teeth that need to be replaced. These elements will also determine the length of the entire dental implant process.
Dental implant time frame
When using traditional methods for implantation, patients can expect the process to last around five months for implants in the lower jaw and six to seven months in the upper jaw. This time frame includes the entire process, from initial surgery to having the permanent crowns or fixed bridge placed. However, this process can last 9-12 months in patients who require bone grafting surgery before the implants are placed.
If you’re a candidate for mini implants, which are used to stabilize and anchor dentures for better comfort and convenience, this process is much faster with very little downtime. Small diameter implants can be placed into the jawbone using local anesthesia, allowing denture stabilization in just one office visit.
