Eating with Invisalign

Why did you choose Invisalign? If you’re like many cosmetic dentistry patients, you were probably attracted to the discreet and comfortable aligners. The smooth plastic eliminates the painful poking of the wires of conventional braces.

But Invisalign has other advantages. Namely, the ability to eat delicious and nutritious foods without worrying about food debris getting stuck in the metal brackets. With the holidays coming up, Invisalign will let you enjoy all of your favorite holiday foods without compromising your treatment schedule.

Eating with Invisalign

During your Invisalign treatment, you’ll remove the aligners before each meal and snack. It’s important to resist the temptation to just take a nibble of a soft food with the aligners in because they can become warped under the force of your bite. Stash your aligner case, toothbrush, and toothpaste in your bag before heading out to your family get-together this holiday season. Then, simply pop out your aligners and store them safely in your case before enjoying the meal. Afterward, brush your teeth and your aligners, rinse, and pop them back in.

To stay on track with your treatment schedule, you will need to wear your Invisalign aligners 20 to 22 hours per day. If you expect to take your time grazing on a holiday buffet at the office party, keep track of how long your aligners were out and try to minimize your “off-time” for the rest of the day.

Many Invisalign patients enjoy an unexpected perk of the treatment process: The tendency to avoid the infamous holiday weight gain. You might not be as tempted to accept a holiday cookie from your co-worker’s stash, since you will have to remove your aligners first. Invisalign is a great way to learn how to make more thoughtful food choices.

Beverage dos and don’ts

Feel free to drink as much water as you wish without having to remove your aligners. It is possible to drink other cool beverages with your aligners in, but bear in mind that the sugar and the pigment from the beverages will get underneath the aligners. This can lead to tooth discoloration, aligner discoloration, and an increased risk of tooth decay. If you do consume other beverages, take out and clean your aligners and brush your teeth as soon as you can.

If you’re in the habit of enjoying an after-meal cup of coffee, do so before you put your aligners back in. Coffee, tea, and red wine will  readily stain the aligners. Additionally, very hot liquids can warp the plastic.
