Fixing a Chipped Tooth

Chipping a tooth – especially a front tooth – instills a sense of panic in most people. How can you ever restore your smile to its original glory? Rest assured that cosmetic dentistry offers a number of solutions to permanently fix a chipped or fractured tooth, even in cases that look beyond repair. Whether caused by a traumatic blow, a sports accident, chewing on hard food, or a fall, these accidents can result in deep cracks or fractures in the tooth structure.

Tooth enamel is the hardest tissue in the body, but this mineralized surface is still prone to damage from decay and trauma. There are several factors that should be evaluated before choosing how to repair a fractured tooth, including the severity of the crack, if there is evidence of tooth decay, and if any of the pulp or nerve structure is involved.

Chipped tooth restoration methods

At Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer several restorations for fixing chipped teeth. Depending on the location of the damaged tooth, the patient’s age and the amount of structure lost, we may recommend:

  • Dental bonding with composite resins is the least inexpensive and least invasive method for repairing a fractured tooth. Composites are tooth-colored and can be customized to match the patient’s exact hue, giving a pleasing cosmetic result. The benefits of composite bonding are many: the procedure is quick (only one office visit), painless and inexpensive. And since composite resins are bonded directly to the tooth surface, very little filing is needed on healthy tooth structure. Composite bonding can last upwards of 10 years, requires no special maintenance, but may not be recommended in cases where more than half of the tooth has been fractured or broken off.
  • Porcelain Veneers – For larger chips, we often suggest restoration with porcelain veneers because of their strength, durability and aesthetic results. Veneers do require “tooth prepping” in which a fine layer of the structure is removed prior to bonding, to diminish extra bulk. A customized veneer, based on dental impressions, will look, feel and function just like your own tooth. Best of all—porcelain veneers can last 25-30 years when properly cared for.
  • Crown – A severely chipped tooth that causes pain signifies pulpal (nerve) involvement. When X-rays show advanced tooth decay, we would likely recommend treatment with a ceramic or porcelain crown, which functions like a tooth-colored cap. In some instances, decayed material will need to be removed with a root canal before the crown is created and placed. Thanks to advances in dental technology, these treatments cause very little discomfort and especially anxious patients may want to discuss options for sedation dentistry. Here in our Long Island office, we are proud to offer CEREC crowns, using 3D technology to create custom crowns in a day. Similar to veneers, crowns can last decades with proper maintenance and oral hygiene.
