Lose a Tooth? You Have Options

If you are an adult missing one or more of your teeth, you are not alone. In fact, more than 30 million adults in the United States are missing all of their teeth in one or both jaws, and a significant percentage of those adults look to dental implants as the solution to their tooth loss. From traditional treatments like dentures and bridges, to dental implants, Long Island cosmetic dentists Dr. Eliot and Dr. Nick can help you regain a winning smile by restoring your pearly whites to top form.

Dentures

Dentures are a temporary way to cover a gap left by one or more lost teeth. These appliances do not require surgery and are low-cost and relatively maintenance free. However, dentures do have some drawbacks, including their ability to slip out of position – sometimes at inopportune social moments. Dentures can also be somewhat uncomfortable, particularly during the initial “breaking in” period. Some patients find that dentures must also be replaced every five to seven years, due to subtle changes to the mouth that prevent the appliances from fitting properly over time.

Bridges

Bridges can be removable or cemented into position and can last many years before a replacement bridge is needed. Dental bridges fill the gap left by lost teeth by attaching to healthy teeth on either side of the gap via crowns that fit snugly over the healthy teeth. The replacement tooth in the center, called a pontic, gives a natural, even look to your smile. While bridges are an immediate, low-cost solution to lost teeth, like dentures, they do have some drawbacks that can make them a less attractive option for some patients.

Dental Implants

Dental implants have become the top choice for replacing lost teeth in recent years, due to their durability and low maintenance. Implants are anchored to the gum-line by surgical grade titanium posts that hold them securely in position. A replacement tooth is affixed to the post, giving you a natural appearance that can last a lifetime. In the months following surgery, tissue grows around the implant, securing it in place so you might even forget you have the implant in your mouth!
