Why a Great Smile is Worth the Investment

We all want to make a great first impression. When meeting someone for the first time, they are taking inventory of your body language, how you dress, and how you speak – making an instant judgment. A new study finds that having an attractive smile plays a pivotal role in how we are perceived in our social and professional lives – and can go a long way in making an incredible lasting impression. Research conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) shows that a beautiful smile is one of our most valuable assets – one that withstands the rigors of time and is worth the investment.

Smiling makes a lasting impression

According to the AACD study, nearly 50 percent survey participants feel that a smile is the most memorable feature when meeting someone for the first time – yet another reason to flash your pearly whites during first encounters. After a smile, participants noted the first thing people said (25 percent), followed by their clothing (9 percent) and their perfume or cologne (8 percent).

A great smile projects confidence

Whether you’re 25 or 55, your smile is one of your most attractive features, according to 45 percent of participants polled. More than half of respondents aged 50 and older felt that a smile ages more attractively over the years, compared to other features like your figure or your hair.

More than a third of participants perceive those with a flawed smile as less confident and less attractive than people who have straight white teeth. In addition, women more than men (40 versus 35 percent) felt that a dull or flawed smile makes a person less appealing.

Winning smiles are a smart investment

Maintaining a youthful appearance was important to 80 percent of participants, who say they would spend money to preserve their looks and ward off the effects of aging. Over 62 percent feel that preserving their teeth and smiles are worthwhile investment compared to their weight (48 percent), thinning hair (33 percent), under-eye circles (33 percent), varicose veins (28 percent) or wrinkles (31 percent).

Put your best face forward

In short, a winning smile has the power to make a positive first impression. Smiling shows others that you are approachable and friendly. Research has shown that smiling makes others feel more comfortable around you, and may also lower stress hormone levels.
