Is It Painful To Have A Crown Put On Your Tooth?

dental crowns veneersDental crowns, sometimes referred to as caps, are restorative treatments that can have major benefits for a patient’s dental health. Despite their many benefits, a lot of patients put off getting crowns because they are worried the procedure will hurt. However, these worries are unfounded, as the procedure for getting a crown at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry is simple and pain-free!

What Do Crowns Do?

Crowns are used to boost a vulnerable tooth’s strength when the tooth can’t support a filling. For example, a broken or severely decayed tooth is usually fitted with a crown so the tooth will have the strength to chew and bite normally. Crowns are also used to top dental implants and support bridges to replace missing teeth, and to improve a tooth’s appearance.

Crowns are made to match the patient’s other teeth, and are often crafted from materials like ceramic, porcelain, and metal.

The Typical Crown Procedure

A crown procedure is usually split into two appointments. At the first appointment, the tooth that is receiving the crown is prepared. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic, and the tooth is worked down to make room for the crown. The doctor will also make impressions of the area to custom-make the crown.

The crown is permanently placed in the second appointment. The area is again numbed with local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Patients can also opt for sedation to help them relax during both appointments.

Because of the sedation and anesthetic, getting a crown is not painful. The patient might feel mild sensitivity or discomfort after the sedation and anesthetic wear off, but it is minimal and shouldn’t last long. The benefits of getting a crown greatly outweigh any short-term discomfort.

Enhanced Crown Benefits

The benefits of crowns are enhanced even more at Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Elliot and Dr. Nick help Suffolk County patients replace large fillings, protect weak teeth, cover poorly shaped teeth, and solve many other dental issues with advanced CEREC dental crowns.

CEREC crowns are made of solid ceramic or resin, and can be custom-made in office in a single appointment. The process is high-tech, but reassuringly simple. First, the doctors examine and prepare the tooth, and then they take optical digital impressions of the tooth. A 3-D printer shapes the crown while you wait, and its placed in your mouth, polished, and bonded in no time.

The CEREC process makes getting a crown simple and quick, so you can enjoy all the benefits without any of the inconvenience.
