Whatever holiday you celebrate in December, the desire to have a beautiful smile is universal. The popular jingle “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth” adequately describes the difficulty of going without a normal smile – from the social isolation to difficulty speaking. Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot, two highly credentialed cosmetic dentists from Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry, explain what options exist to give you the perfect front teeth.
Dental implants are considered the most desirable option for replacement front teeth because they are strong, last for decades, look and function just like normal teeth, prevent damage to the surrounding teeth and jaw, and can be placed in as little as a day. Good candidates for implants need to be in good overall health, have good underlying bone support, and be willing to quit smoking during the healing process. Patients with chronic illness like leukemia or diabetes may not be good candidates. Patients with significant bone loss may need to come in for multiple visits for grafting procedures that could take months before receiving implants.
A fixed bridge is another option to replace missing front teeth, but without the need for surgery. The adjacent teeth are prepared by shaving down the enamel. A prosthetic device fabricated out of metal, ceramics, glass or a combination of materials is then cemented in place. Benefits are that they look and feel like real teeth, they don’t require removal for cleaning as dentures do, and they are less expensive than implants. Fixed bridges can last a good decade with proper care. On the downside, fixed bridges require irreversible damage to the abutting teeth for support, and it may require extra effort to clean.
Removable dentures are the least expensive option that are made from metal and plastic. They do not require surgery, can be easily repaired if damaged, and easily come out for cleaning. On the downside, some patients say they find it challenging to talk or eat with dentures and the prosthetic does not interact with the jaw in the same way to prevent bone loss. As the mouth changes over time, the denture may not fit as well and may require maintenance.
