Implant design and fixation are some of the main services we provide here at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry. Naturally, our patients have many questions that Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot are more than happy to answer at individual consultations prior to any work being done.
We’d like to share a few common questions, though, to put your mind at ease as you consider options for enhancing your smile through the use of dental implants.
If you need just one crown put in, we can create a single implant. If you need two or more teeth, we may recommend a partial prosthesis, which is also called a “fixed bridge.” A complete dental prosthesis replaces all teeth in the upper or lower jaw. In contrast to a permanent fixed prosthesis, a removable prosthesis attaches to a bar or ball that sits in the socket. In some cases, bone grafting work may need to be done to give the prosthetics a stable base.
In our office, patients can get dental implants done for as low as $1995 on special. If you’re looking for a lower cost alternative, you may also consider a dental bridge or partial denture as long as you have stable abutment teeth to support this type of prosthesis. If financing is an issue and you still want dental implants, contact our office to discuss low-interest payment plans with CareCredit loans and similar alternatives.
Dental implants are comprised of tiny titanium posts surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. The bone bonds with these titanium “tooth root substitutes” to create a strong foundation for artificial porcelain teeth, which look and feel surprisingly like your own natural teeth.
While bridges and partials are more affordable upfront, there are a few drawbacks. For starters, they are more difficult to care for, as you have to remove them for eating and cleaning (as opposed to fixed implants that are cared for just as easily as your permanent, natural teeth). Many people complain that dentures slip when they talk or cause some form of discomfort to wear.
Another point to consider is that dental bridges may only last 15 years, compared to implants, which should last a lifetime. Furthermore, a bridge or partial will not “trick” the jaw into thinking real teeth are there in the same way a fixed implant does, so you may need to deal with the consequences of jawbone atrophy or structural changes to the face later down the road.
Dental implant innovation has come a long way in recent years. Our system uses CAT scan, computer technology and 3-D modeling to plan for implant placement without the presence of the patient. When this technology is combined with the vast experience and knowledge of Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot, we are able to offer same day implants for many of our patients.
Many practices only offer local anesthesia for dental implant and bone graft patients. We are New York State certified to do IV sedation (also called “Twilight Sedation”) – the same type you receive when going in for a routine colonoscopy. A thin needle is placed into a vein of your arm or hand, while medication keeps you lightly relaxed. IV sedation keeps you feeling calm, comfortable and dreamy during the dental procedure. You may even drift off to sleep! This type of sedation dentistry is considered safer to administer than general anesthesia, but is just as effective at calming anxiety.
