In recent years, the use of dental implants has become wildly popular for addressing the embarrassment and discomfort that comes from missing natural teeth. However, not all patients have the necessary existing bone density for strong, lasting placement of implants. This may be because of previous extractions, infections, periodontal disease or dental traumas. Fortunately, it is usually possible for those patients to undergo a procedure called a sinus lift, enabling the sinus membrane to be raised and allowing additional room for bone augmentation meant to provide a stable foundation for the seating of implants.
At Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, our sinus lift and bone augmentation methods are the result of years of study and practical experience, and Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot are committed to serving our restoration and implant patients at the highest possible level.
There are multiple reasons why a patient may need augmentation of the bone in and around the jaw, but the most common reason is to lay a proper foundation for the placement of dental implants.
who are missing several teeth in this part of the mouth
who are lacking significant bone density in the jaw bone
who want implants, but need to safeguard against damage to the sinus floor
who are affected by genetic problems that have caused them to lose teeth
During a sinus lift procedure, an incision will be made in the tissues of the gum situated near the cheek and upper portion of the jaw. When this is completed, tissue can be shifted so that the bone underneath is visible to the doctor. The exposed bone will be cut in order to make a flap that is adjusted upward toward the sinus cavity. This also serves to lift the sinus membrane as well, resulting in added area in between it and the patient’s jaw.
The space that is created will be filled with grafting materials intended to facilitate regeneration of bone before the incision is closed with stitches. Following a prescribed period of healing which can last for several months, the patient will be left with a durable base to which implants can be permanently fixed without concern. Grafting materials used to produce new bone volume include the patient’s own bone taken from the shin, mouth or hip area; human cadaver-based or bovine bone products; or synthetically produced grafting material.
There can be no denying the fact that dental implants afford patients with missing or failing teeth an incredible opportunity to regain confidence and achieve the smile they have always desired. However, without the proper bone density and jaw structure, placement of dental implants can be unwise and ill-advised. Luckily, the sinus lift and subsequent bone augmentation procedures provide individuals with a solution that lays the groundwork for implant seating that will endure for years to come.
Because every case is unique, the costs involved in a sinus lift and bone graft procedure do vary. The positioning of the patient’s sinus floor and the degree of existing bone loss will be largely determinative of the price. At Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, we believe that high quality dental care and restoration work should be within the reach of everyone, and that is why we are happy to offer a range of financial options and flexible payment plans.
