The Truth About Dental Implants: 4 Myths Busted

27 Jul 2021 by  admin in Dental Implants Resources

Dental implants are long-term tooth replacement solutions that mimic the look, feel, and maintenance of natural teeth. They are generally made from titanium roots and implanted directly into the jawbone and fitted with dental crowns. They provide superior support and permanence when compared to other tooth-replacement methods.

Interested in dental implants? Here are 4 myths about them:

Myth #1: Dental Implants are Purely Cosmetic Solutions

Many people believe that dental implants only offer cosmetic benefits. However, missing teeth can have serious health implications:

  • Difficulty Eating and Speaking – Teeth are a crucial part of both eating and speaking. Missing teeth can prevent people from chewing or biting certain foods or properly enunciating.
  • Tooth Misalignment – Even one missing tooth can cause the surrounding teeth to fall out of alignment, causing even more problems like temporomandibular jaw joint (TMJ) pain and TMD.
  • Jawbone Deterioration – Teeth provide structure and support for the jawbone, so if they fall out, the jawbone can shrink and deteriorate.
  • Gum Disease and Tooth Decay – Missing teeth also increase the risk of decay and gum disease.

Myth #2: Dental Implants Can Only Replace Single Missing Teeth

Contrary to popular belief, dental implants are ideal for replacing multiple or even full arches of missing teeth– meaning all the upper or lower teeth. The implant methods for replacing multiple teeth are called All on 4 and All on 6 because they use four or six implants to hold up bridges that cover the gaps.

Oral surgeons used 3D images to plot the perfect location and angle for each of the four or six implants, ensuring they can hold enough crowns and bridges to support the gaps left by multiple missing teeth. They then implant the titanium roots into the jawbone with surgical guides.

Myth #3: The Dental Implant Recovery Process Is Awful

Dental implant recovery is very simple. The procedure is generally painless as the oral surgeon numbs the area before beginning. There is usually some discomfort and soreness around the surgical site after the anesthetic wears off, but it can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medication.

Patients are then required to follow simple post-op instructions like eating soft food for about two weeks and brushing gently twice a day to keep the surgical sites clean.

Myth #4: I Can’t Get an MRI If I Have Dental Implants

Many patients worry they won’t be able to get MRIs if they get dental implants, but this is not true. MRIs are, in the simplest terms, powerful magnets, and can therefore interact with magnetic metals.  The metals used to make dental implant roots are not magnetic, so they will not be affected by an MRI.
