How Can A Dentist Help with Sensitive Teeth?

11 May 2021 by  admin in General Dentistry Resources

A dentist can help with sensitive teeth with treatments such as fluoride, root canals, gum grafts, and dental bonding. In addition, several at-home treatments have proven effective at treating milder tooth sensitivity.

Symptoms of Sensitive Teeth

People with sensitive teeth often feel discomfort or pain at the root, top, or side of the affected teeth when they come into contact with triggers. While these can vary from person to person, the most common include:

  • Hot or cold food or drinks
  • Sweet food and drinks
  • Acidic food and drinks
  • Cold air
  • Cold water
  • Flossing or brushing
  • Mouthwash

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

Teeth above the gums are covered with a tough protective layer called enamel, and teeth below the gums are covered with cementum. Below both protective layers is dentin, a sensitive, porous layer that’s connected to teeth nerves. If either are damaged, the dentin and, therefore, the nerves can be exposed to hot or cold, which causes pain and discomfort. Many things can cause these protective layers to get damaged, such as:

  • Hard toothbrushes or aggressive brushing
  • Acidic foods and drinks
  • Tooth decay or damaged fillings
  • Gum recession
  • Tooth grinding, called bruxism
  • Dental treatments like whitening, fillings, and crowns

Treating Tooth Sensitivity at Home

You can treat mild tooth sensitivity at home by brushing with desensitizing toothpaste that can help bolster enamel and block pain that comes with tooth sensitivity.  However, the best at-home treatment for tooth sensitivity is prevention. After all, once your enamel is damaged or worn down, it won’t come back. Protect your enamel and cementum by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and by using a firm but gentle touch when brushing and flossing.

Dentist Treatments for Tooth Sensitivity

If you have moderate or severe sensitivity or sensitivity caused by a bigger problem than aggressive brushing, you will most likely need professional treatment. In fact, it’s always best to talk to your dentist about any tooth sensitivity as soon as you can. That way, they can determine the root of the problem and prescribe the proper treatment. Some ways dentists can help with sensitive teeth include:

  • Fluoride Treatments – Your dentist can apply fluoride to the sensitive parts of your teeth to help bolster the enamel and reduce symptoms. This can be done in-office or at home with a custom tray.
  • Bonding – Applying bonding resin to the tooth surface can help cover and protect exposed roots and dentin.
  • Gum Grafts – If the sensitivity is from gum recession, the best solution might be surgical gum grafting. In this procedure, a small amount of tissue from your mouth or a donor is attached to the receded gums to help cover the exposed root.
  • Root Canals – In extreme cases in which all other treatments are ineffective, your dentist may recommend a root canal. Root canals remove the tooth’s pulp, which contains the nerves, and will stop all sensitivity symptoms.
