Metal free dentistry on Long Island

One area where Long Island dentists Dr. Elliot and Dr. Nick have devoted special attention is the use of metal free dentistry. Most of us have grown up never questioning the use of composite metal or amalgam fillings, not realizing the inherent dangers of having mercury based fillings in our teeth.

Amalgam, the single most popular choice for filling cavities for the last hundred years, is a combination of about 50% liquid mercury and powdered metal alloys such as silver, tin, or copper. It has always been a popular choice because it’s fairly durable, relatively inexpensive, and easy to apply.

However, the silvery tooth fillings are not particularly attractive and are considerably less functional than today’s metal free options. A major flaw of amalgam tooth fillings that many of us have experienced is contraction or expansion when exposed to hot or cold temperatures. The shrinking or expansion weakens the structural integrity of the tooth, and the movement of the filling exposes the tooth to bacteria, which can lead to serious gum disease.

Metal free dentistry a safer alternative

comparison of silver and white fillingsMore significantly, we are also aware from numerous studies that amalgam tooth fillings have been found to release a toxic mercury vapor into our mouths, which slowly leaches its way into our bodies and deposits trace mercury into our vital organs for as long as we have these fillings.

In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a news release warning against the use of amalgam fillings in pregnant women and those with mercury sensitivity. It later followed this warning up by reclassifying amalgam fillings from a Class I medical device to a Class II (higher risk) device. Since then, consumer groups have been petitioning the agency to place a ban on amalgam fillings.

Studies have shown that mercury poisoning is cumulative and can take as long as twenty or more years to manifest. Long term mercury poisoning has been linked to depression, decreased fertility, neurological impairment, gastrointestinal issues, and memory loss among many other effects.

The World Health Organization recently published a report entitled, “Future Use of Materials for Dental Restoration” which states “recent data suggest that RBCs (resin-based composites) perform equally as well as amalgam and offer additional oral health benefits… adhesive resin materials allow for less tooth destruction and, as a result, a longer survival of the tooth itself.”

Composite tooth fillings, or white tooth fillings

Let Suffolk County, Long Island dentists Dr. Elliot and Dr. Nick show you the benefits of metal free composite fillings and crowns:

  • The composite fillings are composed of an extremely durable blend of glass, quartz, and resin considerably stronger than metal fillings
  • Also known as white fillings, they are tooth colored, which are far more aesthetically pleasing than traditional metal versions
  • Composite resin fillings pose no risk of toxicity or leaching of undesirable elements into the system
  • Resin fillings are not subject to shrinking and expansion due to heat or cold. This results in a tooth with the structural integrity of an original solid tooth.
  • Composite fillings easily bond to tooth enamel for a smooth and natural appearance.

In many cases, older metal tooth fillings are removed and replaced with metal-free options as necessary and any new areas of tooth decay are also restored. Ask Dr. Elliot and Dr. Nick about the safe removal of amalgam tooth fillings.

CEREC tooth restoration for fillings and crowns

CERECAn ideal application of metal free dentistry available at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry is CEREC (CEramic REConstruction), a method created at the University of Zurich in 1980 for constructing, producing, and inserting metal free dental restorations in a single appointment, rather than over multiple appointments with lab work in between.

Rather than employing outdated and dangerous amalgam metal tooth fillings, Dr. Elliot and Dr. Nick can, in one visit, use durable tooth colored ceramic materials to restore your teeth to their original beauty and durability. The ceramic material is bonded to your teeth and is impervious to the shrinking and expansion of typical metal fillings when exposed to hot or cold temperatures.

CEREC can be used for tooth fillings, crowns, and almost any type of single tooth restoration including chipped and discolored teeth. Since we are able to fabricate our own materials in the convenience of our own office, we are able to keep our costs down and pass the savings onto our patients.  Greater convenience and affordability in addition to safer health benefits and faster results make the CEREC one of our best features.
