Many adults and teenagers who want straighter teeth are considering either Invisalign clear aligners or traditional braces. Both orthodontic treatments have their advantages, but which more effective? And how about the cost – which is more affordable in the long run? Ultimately, your dentist can help you make a more informed decision when choosing between Invisalign v. metal braces.
Dr. Elliott and Dr. Nick at Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry are here to answer some of these frequently asked questions about the capabilities and limitations of Invisalign compared to braces.
Both orthodontic treatments can help straighten and move teeth, promote proper function and oral health, and improve your smile. The bottom line is that while Invisalign can produce amazing results, the treatment is most effective for simpler cases of tooth crowding and misalignment, whereas complex bite issues may be better treated with traditional braces or a combination of the two.
The clear plastic Invisalign aligners, which are removable and changed every two weeks, may not be the best tool for a patient with extreme malocclusion, which can manifest as an overbite or an underbite. Both conditions can be greatly improved with Invisalign, but a 100 percent correction may not be feasible, depending on the underlying cause.
However, the results will depend greatly on the skill and experience of your cosmetic dentist, so it’s important to find a qualified dentist who has Invisalign before and after photos showing a high success rate of correcting intruding upper and lower teeth. In some cases, patients with severe overbites can achieve optimum results using a combination of Invisalign and braces.
Another limitation of Invisalign is seen in patients who have canines or premolars (cylindrical shaped teeth) that need substantial rotation, because the clear trays lack the “friction grip” needed to move them properly. However, Invisalign can easily rotate angular teeth such as incisors.
On the flip side, Invisalign is very successful for treating crowded teeth effectively. Here at our Long Island office, Invisalign Teen has become incredibly popular thanks to its special features that help with patient compliance. And after treatment with braces or Invisalign, patients are always encouraged to use their retainers to maintain optimum results, since teeth will want to move back into their old positions.
Whether you choose Invisalign or braces, results will really depend on patient compliance and good follow-up care with retainers. For many of our patients who desire a beautiful smile without the hassle and inconvenience of braces, Invaslign is the superior choice.
Cost is roughly the same for both braces and Invisalign, but can vary somewhat depending on the length of treatment.
