Is It Safe to Go to the Dentist During the Coronavirus Pandemic?

22 Jul 2020 by  admin in News

Federal and NY State regulators have given the okay to dental practices to re-open as restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic continue to ease. By implementing proper safety protocols, dental offices can keep the risk of COVID-19 transmission low and keep patients, doctors, and staff as protected as possible. According to a survey by the American Dental Association, over 70% of dental offices have reopened since the end of June.

Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry in Suffolk County is open and welcoming patients for all procedures, including cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Our foremost priority is to keep our patients and staff safe and healthy. We are closely following the guidelines outlined by the New York State Dental Association to minimize risk and control infection. You can count on us to stay informed, keep you updated, and put every possible effort into minimizing risk.

What are the precautionary measures for dental procedures during coronavirus disease?

As dentists are experienced healthcare professionals, they are working hard to help minimize the risk of infection to keep their patients and staff healthy.

Though different dental offices will have variations in precautionary measures, most practices are:

  • Mandating staff wear personal protective gear
  • Using hospital-grade disinfectants
  • Taking patient temperatures before treatments
  • Using single-use disposable materials whenever possible
  • Asking patients to wear face coverings when not receiving treatment
  • Implementing the most innovative sterilization protocols

Offices are also taking more patient-based approaches, such as removing all magazines from waiting rooms and taking away some chairs to encourage social distancing. Another measure is to space out appointments to make sure patients and staff can reduce the amount of time spent in close proximity to others.

What can you do to stay safe at the dentist?

There are steps that you can take to keep yourself and others safe while going to the dentist during the pandemic. Make sure you:

  • Wear a cloth face mask when not being treated
  • Avoid touching your mouth, eyes, and nose
  • Cover a sneeze or cough with a mask, tissue, or your elbow
  • Avoid contact with commonly touched surfaces such as elevator buttons and door handles whenever possible
  • Use a glove or tissue when opening doors
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after treatment and touching any public surfaces
  • Use hand sanitizer when hand washing is unavailable
  • Cancel or reschedule your appointment if you’re experiencing symptoms
