Experience the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Are dental anxieties keeping you from seeking routine preventive dental care? Do you want to schedule a smile makeover, but are reluctant to spend a long time in the dentist’s chair? Consider asking your cosmetic dentist about the various types of sedation dentistry.

Benefits of sedation dentistry

Sedation dentistry usually doesn’t involve putting a person completely to sleep, which is known as general anesthesia. Rather, it involves administering FDA-approved medications to induce different levels of relaxation. The implications are tremendous for people who have been putting off treatment because of dental anxieties.

Sedation dentistry is also ideal for people who need to have extensive work done, such as multiple procedures to extract damaged teeth, replace missing teeth, treat gum disease, or reconstruct gum tissue. Sometimes, dental work needs to be broken up into multiple office visits. With sedation dentistry, the dentist may be able to perform all of the work in one visit, which is certainly more convenient for the patient.

Sedation dentistry can even make dental work far more comfortable for patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. This is a condition that can involve considerable jaw pain, which is made worse by holding one’s mouth open for lengthy periods of time such as during a dentist visit. Sedation dentistry can make it possible for these patients to have a comfortable dental experience.

Several sedation options

There are different levels of relaxation that are achievable through sedation dentistry. Nitrous oxide induces the lightest level of relaxation. It’s commonly referred to as laughing gas. Conscious oral sedation involves taking a sedative by mouth. This pill doesn’t force you to fall asleep, but induces a relaxed, drowsy state. IV sedation is administered by an anesthesiologist. An intravenous drip delivers anti-anxiety medication directly into a vein to induce a very deep state of relaxation. With IV sedation, your dental appointment will be over before you know it.

Only your cosmetic dentist can definitively determine if sedation dentistry is right for you. To get started, you’ll be asked to provide your full health history. Be sure to inform your dentist if you’re allergic to any medications or might be pregnant.

If sedation dentistry is a good option for you, you may need to have a responsible adult drive you home from your dental appointment and stay with you until the effects of the medication fully wear off.
