Dental Bone Graft & Sinus Lift
Dental Implants Long Island
Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry is fully equipped to perform dental bone grafts and sinus lift procedures for those who require bone growth prior to having dental implants.
Though dental implants can often be an ideal solution for those who have lost natural teeth for a wide range of reasons, not everyone has sufficient underlying bone structure to properly place them. The reason for the bone deficiency can vary from patient to patient, and may be due to prior tooth extraction, dental injuries, infection or periodontal disease. As a result, the procedure known as the sinus lift is frequently performed as a means to raise the floor of the sinus membrane adjacent to the jawbone and provide a durable foundation on which implants can rest.
In conjunction with the sinus lift, bone grafting is typically done to reestablish the necessary bone density at the desired implant site.

Ideal candidates for dental bone graft & sinus lift procedures
Though there can be several reasons to seek additional bone volume in the jaw, most often it is done in preparation for dental implant placement.
Lifting the sinus membrane and augmenting available bone through grafting typically makes good sense for patients who:
- Have lost substantial bone density in their posterior maxilla
- Are missing multiple teeth in this region of the mouth
- Suffer from birth defects or genetic issues that have led to missing teeth
- Require adjustment in order to protect the sinus floor against damage from implant placement
Basics of sinus lift procedure
Sinus lifts are surgical procedures requiring an incision to be made in the gum tissues near the cheek area near the upper jaw. Once the incision is made, the doctor can move the tissue aside in order to expose the jawbone beneath. This exposed portion of bone is then cut so that a flap is created which can be moved upward in the direction of the sinus cavity. The sinus membrane itself will be simultaneously lifted along with the bone, creating additional space between it and the jawbone. The void that is created by the shift is then packed with graft material which will lead to additional bone regeneration. The end result, following a substantial period of healing, is a stronger foundation into which dental implants may be securely placed.
Dental bone graft materials can be obtained from different sources, including:
- The patient’s own body, as doctors may decide to harvest bone from the mouth, shin or hip
- Prepared bone products , either human cadaver or bovine
- Synthetic grafting material
Though each case is unique, it is often the case that several millimeters of additional bone volume will be added just above the existing jawbone. After the bone graft granules are packed into the void left by the sinus lift, the area will be stitched closed. Following a brief healing period, dental implants are placed in the mouth. In some cases, it is possible for implants to be placed immediately.
Sinus lift recovery process
Following this type of procedure, swelling is not uncommon, and bleeding from the nose or mouth may occur. Sneezing with great force or blowing the nose soon after surgery can cause stitches to come loose or shifting of bone graft material. Any lingering discomfort can be treated with conventional pain medication, and patients are likely to be given antibiotics to prevent infection.
Roughly 7-10 days following the sinus lift, a follow-up visit will occur during which the surgical site is examined and any remaining stitches removed. Subsequent office visits may be necessary in order to ensure proper progress. Once the prescribed healing period has elapsed, implants can be received, bringing with them all of the positive benefits of this type of permanent restoration.
