Your Dentist Can Help With Your Snoring Problem!

8 Jan 2015 by  admin in Sleep Apnea Treatment

Snoring may be a bigger problem than you think! Sure, it keeps others up at night, but it may be a sign of a condition that is more than just annoying: obstructive sleep apnea. This potentially deadly condition involves multiple pauses in breathing during sleep and puts you at risk for several serious health problems. Fortunately, sleep apnea treatment is available at your Suffolk County Dentist. At Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot can provide help for your snoring problem.

How do I know that I have a problem with sleep apnea?

Not all patients who snore have sleep apnea, but a good percentage of snorers do have a problem with the condition. If you wonder if you might be among them, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I snore just about every night?
  • Do I wake up often or suddenly feeling like I am choking?
  • Do others describe me snorting, choking, holding my breath, or gasping while sleeping?

If you answered yes to all three questions, there is a strong possibility that you may suffer from sleep apnea. Other indications of a sleep apnea problem are waking with a dry mouth or a headache, feeling tired all day, and having problems with memory or irritability.

You are also more likely to suffer from sleep apnea if you are:

  • Male
  • Over 40
  • Overweight
  • Smoke, drink, or use sedatives
  • Have enlarged tonsils
  • Have a thicker neck circumference
  • Have nasal congestion
  • Have a family history of the problem

If you think you may have a sleep apnea problem, come in to see Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot for an evaluation.

Why should I seek sleep apnea treatment with my Suffolk County dentist?

Let’s say that you have a sleep apnea problem and you live in Suffolk County, where you have access to excellent treatment with Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry. Why should you take the time to come in for treatment? Well, consider these reasons:

  • Your loved ones will finally sleep well! After years of snoring, wouldn’t you like your sleep partner to finally be relieved of the noise that keeps him or her up all night?
  • You will sleep well! Aren’t you “tired of being tired”? Sleep is crucial to your ability to function on a day-to-day basis. Relationships, safety, work performance, and enjoyment of life generally all suffer when you cannot get a good night’s sleep.
  • Your health will improve. Sleep apnea raises the risk for chronic fatigue syndrome, stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, obesity, premature skin aging, hypertension, and congestive heart failure. You owe it to yourself to take a step that will improve your overall health, well-being, and longevity.

How can Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot treat my sleep apnea problem?

There are two main ways to treat sleep apnea. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is a very effective treatment. However, it involves a machine and mask that many patients find impossible to tolerate. Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot can provide a second type of treatment: oral appliance therapy or a “snoring mouthpiece.” Your primary care physician can refer you to our offices for this type of treatment. We can then do an exam and take X-rays to make sure that you are a good candidate (most are). We make the appliance especially for you and then do follow up adjustments and analysis to make sure that it is working effectively.

Oral appliance therapy is most likely covered under your insurance plan. Please call 631-744-5700 to schedule an appointment today. A good night’s sleep for you and your sleep partner may be just a dentist’s visit away!
