Can I Get Veneers with an Overbite?

28 Jul 2021 by  admin in Veneers

It is possible to get veneers with an overbite—however, it’s best to first correct any bite issues with orthodontic treatments like Invisalign.

What is An Overbite?

An overbite is when the top teeth overlap the bottom, generally by about one-third. Overbite is frequently confused with overjet when the top teeth stick out farther than the bottom. Overbites are mainly caused by genetics, though they can sometimes occur after a trauma or injury to the teeth or jaw. It’s essential to correct an overbite as soon as possible because, if left untreated, it can cause serious issues including:

  • Jaw pain
  • Difficulty eating
  • Enamel and tooth damage
  • Speech problems
  • Gum disease
  • Changes to the face shape
  • Snoring or other airway problems

What Are Veneers?

Dental porcelain laminates, otherwise known as veneers, are coverings that mimic the look and feel of natural teeth and are used to correct color, size, shape, length, or position. They can be made from thin porcelain, acrylic, or resin composites. However, porcelain veneers are the most popular as they closely resemble natural teeth but are more stain-resistant than other types.

Most patients choose to get veneers to fix the appearance of their smile, improving their quality of life and self-confidence. They are custom-made for each patient so that the dentist will make an impression or model of the patient’s teeth. To apply veneers and bond them to each individual tooth, the dentist will also remove the top layer of enamel from each tooth.

Can Veneers Fix an Overbite?

Veneers can help the appearance of an overbite, but they will not fix the underlying issue. That’s why it’s generally recommended to correct alignment issues, like overbites, before applying veneers– because it can cause veneers to crack and break. Although orthodontics might take longer than veneers, they shift teeth into a healthy, functional position so the veneers can be properly and comfortably placed. A common solution for overbites and other teeth alignment issues is Invisalign. It corrects teeth alignment without the wires, metal, discomfort, and embarrassment that comes with traditional braces.
