Dental health is about more than simply daily brushing and flossing. What you put into your mouth affects the health of your teeth, as well as the heath of your body. While some beverages provide significant benefits, others can strip your enamel and leave your teeth looking less than pristine.
Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry are excited to announce a new online collection of healthy cocktail options put together by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). They also have their own recommendations on drinks to enjoy and those to avoid if you want to put off teeth whitening for as long as possible.
The AACD has partnered with mixologists to create a list of recipes for teeth-healthy drinks. The cocktails are filled to the brim with healthy ingredients like fruits and vegetables. The list also includes a few non-alcoholic options. These beverages can add a fun twist to your entertaining and give you the chance to try innovative ingredient combinations.
Ingredients like green tea combine with fruits, spices and herbs to provide a bevy of benefits for your body as well as your oral health. For example, mint leaves offer antimicrobial benefits, while ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory. Fruits like pineapple, kiwi and banana provide nutrients that strengthen the teeth and whiten them naturally.
The AACD lists a wide variety of mixes, from tropical options to classic teas. Spirits also vary, with dry gin, coconut rum and citrus vodka all making the list. Most concoctions contained a nutritious array of fruits and vegetables, as well as a collection of bitters to add flavor and aid in digestion.
While many of the ingredients listed in this new collection of recipes are beneficial to your mouth and teeth, other popular beverages do not fare as well. Both red and white wine can soften enamel and stain the teeth. The high sugar content of soda pop can lead to cavities as well as tooth erosion. The acidity in many fruit juices can also wear down enamel, while coffee and tea tend to strip teeth of their pristine white hue.
At the same time, there are a number of beverages that are considered healthy for the teeth. Water, particularly water fortified with fluoride, is good for oral health. Many water supplies do have fluoride supplementation, although bottled water will not provide that important addition. Milk, especially non-fat and low-fat varieties, provide nutrients the teeth need, while helping them maintain their pearly white appearance. Unsweetened green and herbal tea also offers important nutrition without contributing to tooth staining.
Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot urge patients to enjoy as many healthy beverages as they can throughout the day to keep teeth white and strong. At the same time limit your intake of staining drinks to prevent early discoloration. If you have already experienced discoloration, we have treatment options available to restore your teeth to their original hue, such as Opalescence laser treatments and porcelain veneers.
Your teeth are the key feature to ensuring a healthy, beautiful smile. With the right care and treatments, they will stay strong and healthy throughout your lifetime.
