As children, we all start out in life with a set of beautiful pearly whites. As we age, that brilliant white tooth enamel may turn a shade or few darker, especially if you indulge in coffee, tea or wine, or are a long-time smoker. Some of these stains are superficial in nature, and can be removed using a whitening toothpaste or good old baking soda when you brush. A professional tooth cleaning and polishing at your dentist’s office can also go a long way toward restoring your luminous smile. However, some discolorations go much deeper into the enamel, and require tooth bleaching or whitening.
There are several teeth whitening treatments available today. You can opt for whitening strips sold at your local pharmacy, which must be worn for 30 minutes daily over a period of weeks to see a noticeable difference. Or you can visit your cosmetic dentist for a supervised tooth whitening treatment that is customized for your needs.
Here at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening, both of which deliver amazing results. Besides questions about tooth sensitivity before and after the procedure, we are often asked how long the results last. Most patients who have professional teeth bleaching treatment can expect their results to fade a bit over time, but your smile should stay whiter and brighter for at least six months to a year, if not longer.
Whatever type of whitening treatment you settle on, be warned that you’ll need to actively maintain the results. If you can’t get by in the morning without your cup of joe, or aren’t willing to give up that red wine, you’ll need to have touch-ups a bit more frequently. Much like keeping your skin glowing with regular facials, your teeth will need periodic whitening to keep them looking great. Some dental professionals advocate repeat treatments every six months, but this time frame will vary tremendously from patient to patient. Some have enjoyed their “movie star” smile for 18 months or longer before returning to the office!
Keep in mind that stopping smoking can also help prevent staining and discoloration. With this in mind, follow these tips to make the most of your tooth whitening treatment:
If you’ve been feeling self-conscious about your smile and are ready for a change, we invite you to schedule a free consultation at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry. If the original cause of your tooth discoloration is genetic and other bleaching treatments have failed to yield impressive results, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers, which are a more permanent solution.
